Before you enquire
CarboTech AC GmbH, the activated carbon manufacturer based in Essen, Germany. Each grade on this page links to CarboTech's own datasheet, which carries the Essen address.
CarboTech Biogas and Biogas Premium are both catalytically impregnated for removing hydrogen sulphide from biogas and landfill gas. Biogas is the economical choice for high sulphur loads; Biogas Premium has a larger pore volume and evenly distributed impregnation for extremely high loads. The better fit depends on H₂S concentration, gas flow and composition, vessel size and the change-out interval you want.
We quote per grade and quantity. Price depends on the grade, order quantity, packing and delivery location. When comparing offers, look at the cost of each change-out and how long the bed lasts between change-outs, not only the price per kilogram.
It follows from the contaminant load and how much of that contaminant the carbon holds under your conditions: concentration multiplied by flow and the change-out interval you want, divided by the carbon's working capacity. The bed must also give enough contact time to meet the outlet limit. Share the inputs below and we will work it out.
Raw material and activation shape the pore structure. The coconut-based grades here, DGK 30x60/60 and SE 1-4, are highly microporous; DGK 30x60/60 targets organic traces at very small concentrations and is mechanically robust with very little dust. Among the coal-based grades, DGF 8x30 GL has a uniform pore structure that adsorbs many different organic compounds. The contaminant and process should decide the grade, not the raw material alone.
They are standard indicators of adsorption capacity. Iodine number is the milligrams of iodine adsorbed per gram of carbon and reflects micropore capacity. CTC number is the percentage of carbon tetrachloride adsorbed by weight and is commonly used for gas-phase grades. BET surface area, in m²/g, is measured by nitrogen adsorption. Use them to compare grades; service life depends on the contaminant and operating conditions.
CarboTech's datasheets warn that wet activated carbon removes oxygen from the surrounding air, so oxygen in closed or partly closed vessels and rooms can fall to hazardous levels. Follow confined-space entry procedures and the warnings in CarboTech's safety data sheets.

Approximate figures are enough to start. If you already use activated carbon, the current grade and change-out interval give the clearest comparison.
