The PSA Process

Our PSA Nitrogen Plants separate nitrogen from compressed air using Carbon Molecular Sieves (CMS). The process is based on the principle of Pressure Swing Adsorption, where oxygen, moisture, and other impurities are adsorbed by the CMS, allowing nitrogen to pass through.

The nitrogen generation plant consists of two adsorbers filled with carbon molecular sieve (CMS). Compressed and purified air passes through the adsorbers where oxygen is absorbed on the CMS, and nitrogen-enriched gas exits the adsorber. During adsorption in one adsorber, the second adsorber is regenerated by depressurization to ambient pressure, and the oxygen-enriched off-gas is vented. The process controller switches between adsorbers approximately every minute.

Carbon Molecular Sieves Technology

The heart of our PSA Nitrogen Plants is the advanced Carbon Molecular Sieves (CMS) technology.

Carbotech CMS Technology

We use material from Carbotech, who has pioneered the scale-up of the production of narrow-pored carbon molecular sieves to an industrial level. In a multi-step process, an ultra-fine pore structure is formed in the molecular sieves pellets. This structure facilitates easy separation of different sized oxygen and nitrogen molecules.

CMS is the crucial element of any PSA plant utilizing the BF-Process. The characteristics of CMS are unique. It is highly resilient towards long-term pressure swing usage. Moreover, the excellent auto-regenerative characteristic of the sieve leads to many years of high-quality nitrogen production. Hence, one CMS charge lasts as long as the PSA plant, making it a safe long-term investment.
